Field CBR Test Apparatus
IS : 2720 (P-XXXI) BS 1377 ASTM D4429
The CBR field test set is designed for making CBR determinations in the
field and is built around a modified Load Frame. CBR field testing can
quickly yield a realtive strength determination without having to rely on
lab tests. Field tests involve forcing a piston into the soil and comparing
the depth of penetration in relation to the load placed on the piston.
Typically, the reaction load used for field testing is a heavy piece of
equipment, such as a loaded dump truck. Gear Box is 2-speed model with a
10,000lbf (45kN) capacity and 3.5 inches of lift. The use of the extension
and connector set provides sufficient flexibilty for almost any type of

Load Truss, 200 kn (20000kgf) capacity, The Truss is of welded I-girder
construction in two halves which can be bolted together when required. The
lower chord, the cross pieces for holding the truss down & the vertical
thrust members are all welded box type construction with two channels
enclosed and welded to I grinder. The Anchorages consist of semi-cylindrical
pieces , each held down by 1 meter long steel spikes, driven in through
holes drilled in the semi cylinder. The spikes should be entered the ground
at about 60 deg. horizontal, four from each side spaced along the length the
anchorage. The cross pieces are moored to the anchorages by channel straps &
bolts. Eight such anchorages are supplied with 200 KN truss. Guy wires with
turn- buckles are supplied to keep the Truss erect . Supplied complete with

Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP)
It is used for rapid in-situ measurement of the structural properties of
existing road pavement constructed with unbound materials. The unit
incorporates an 8 Kg weight having a drop of 575 mm , fitted to end of the
shaft is a 20 mm diameter cone. With the standard DCP measurements can be
made down to a depth of approximately 800 mm. Reading are taken after a set
number of blows, changing the number according to the strength of layer
being penetrated. For good granular bases, readings every 5-10 blows are
satisfactory, but for weaker sub-base layers and sub grades, readings every
1-2 blows may be appropriate.
The DCP requires Three operators, one to hold the instrument in a vertical
position, one to raise the hammer and let it fall and one to record the
results. A typical test takes only a few minutes, providing a very effecient
method of obtaining information, which would otherwise require the
excavation of test pits. Where pavement layers have different strengths,
boundaries can be identified and layer thickness determined.

Swell Pressure Apparatus
It is designed to determine the swelling pressure developed by soil
specimens moulded to desired densities at known moisture contents, when
soaked in water. The load applied to restrain the swelling is transferred on
to a load measuring proving ring through a perforated swell plate and a load
transfer bar. The proving ring is attached to the lead screw of hand
operated load frame. A soaking tank is provided for saturating the specimen
and the base of the mould provided has channels and radial grooves with

Static Cone Penetrometer, 30 KN (3000 kgf) cap, Static cone penetration
test is internationally recognized as a standard field test to collect data
about bearing capacity and frictional resistance of soil. The equipment
meets the essential requirements of IS:4968 (Part - III) the probing part
consists of a cone which has an apex angle of 60 deg and an overall base
diameter of 35.7 mm equivalent to area of 10 cm2 . The cone is connected
with sounding rods which are protected by mantle tubes. The assembly of
sounding rod and mantle tube is pushed into the soil, by means of a
mechanical rack jack or by an engine driven hydraulic pumping unit and ram.
Basically the test procedure consists of first pushing the cone alone, then
the cone and the friction jacket and finally the w hole assembly in sequence
through specified depth and noting the resistance in the first two cases,
limited to the designed capacity of the unit. The readings are taken for
ever y 20 cm of penetration, and thus continuous data of end bearing and
frictional resistance of soil is recorded. The results are correlated with
bearing capacity and settlement of shallow foundation and piles. Static C
one Test is unsuitable for gravelly soils. The Static Cone resistance is
correlated with the 'N' value as obtained from standard penetration test,
thus increasing the utility of the test. 'ASEW' Static Cone Penetrometers,
both hand operated and engine driven, conform to the essential requirements
of IS : 4968 (Part III) - 1976
